Two Excellent Ier Cru Burgundies That Won't Break the Bank

White

2020 Guillaume Curveux Pouilly Fuisse Vignes Blanches 1er cru

2020 is an excellent vintage for white burgundy. Guillaume’ Curveux’s well-priced premier cru Vignes Blanches. It has finally arrived, and it is stunning. Like other fine 2020 whites, it has the rare combination of rich fruit and a firm acid backbone. It also shows generous wood aging.

Vigne Blanche gets its name from the abundance of chalky limestone in its soil. It faces southeast midway up the slope from the village of Fuisse. Curveux's vines are 70 years old,

This premier cru is priced or lower than several large negociants charge for their village offerings. We can offer it at such a low price because Its lack of presence in this country does not interest the broad market. Also, it came to us bypassing some importer's markups.

2020 Guillaume Curveux Pouilly-Fuisse Vignes Blanches 1er Cru; Aroma: reserved, then strong apple acid, wood, and fruit, later mellows and comes together, pear and apple, wet stone lots of depth; Mouth: at first a touch raw, then blooms to a deep purple-tinged apple and pear with underlying notes of wood and acid, complete and satisfying; Excellent $40; Case, 34

Red

2017 Racquillet Mercurey Les Caraby 1er Cru;

François Raquillet is one of the top producers in Mercurey, one of the last "affordable" appellations with authentic terroir in Burgundy. While many famous appellations in Burgundy have sky-rocketed in price, Mercurey remains one of the last bastions of the affordable. Racquillet's wines are modern in style and appeal to lovers of both Old and New World Pinot Noirs.

"an aroma of raspberry crème, it has good extract while not lacking in freshness, an example of great pinot Noir" Revue du Vin de France

2017 Racquillet Mercurey Les Caraby 1er Cru; Color: very dark brownish edge; Mouth: juicy, light, clean fine acid, leanish in the mouth, taut finish, fine acid tannins on the finish; still structured but pure & balanced, classic precision of maturing Pinot; Very Good Plus $35; Case, 28

Decant to drink now or hold for a few years in the cellar.

A Mystery Wine

Appelation strictures do not let us put the wine's identity here. All will be pleasantly revealed at the tasting, But we can say this; it is absolutely of the season, it is delicious in a rich fruited style, and it will be great for Thanksgiving.

An Austrian Burgundian

The Blaufrankisch grape makes the best-known and arguably the best Austrian dry red.

Owner Roland Velich feels his Moric Estate wines should have their own personalities. And be multi-layered, expressive, mysterious, and delicate, the attributes he says have exhilarated people for centuries. The 2020 Moric Estate Blaufrankisch Burgenland is made in just this singular style.

2020 Moric Estate Blaufrankisch Burgenland: Pure blue fruited energy with a dynamic sense of minerality and notes of forest floor in this elegant young wine. Amazing balance. Excellent $36/bottle, case $31

Two California Classics
